Sidama (also spelled Sidamo) is one of Ethiopia's most important coffee-producing regions and one of the first African coffees to receive a Geographical Indication (GI) designation. This guide covers everything importers and roasters need to know about sourcing Sidama coffee.

About Sidama Coffee

Sidama is a large coffee-growing zone in southern Ethiopia, bordering Yirgacheffe to the south. The region produces coffee across a wide range of micro-climates and elevations, resulting in significant flavor diversity within the Sidama designation.

Sidama coffee is known for its balance and versatility. It is less intensely floral than Yirgacheffe but offers more body and fruit complexity:

Grades and Certifications

Sidama coffee is available in Grade 1 through Grade 4. For specialty buyers, Grade 1 and 2 washed Sidama is the most sought-after. Certifications available include:

  • Organic (USDA NOP and EU organic) — available from certified cooperatives
  • Fairtrade — available from Fairtrade-certified cooperatives
  • Rainforest Alliance — available from select washing stations
  • Conventional (no certification) — available at all grades
