Higher logistics cost
Chilled product requires faster shipping and more careful temperature management, increasing freight cost.
Shorter shelf life
Chilled beef has a 21–28 day shelf life vs 12–18 months for frozen, so there is less flexibility in the supply chain.
Premium quality perception
Chilled beef is perceived as fresher and commands a premium in retail and food service markets.
Lower volume
Fewer buyers can handle chilled product, so volumes are lower and per-unit costs are higher.
Factor 3: Packaging
Packaging specification affects both cost and shelf life. The main options:
Vacuum Pack (VP)
Individual cuts vacuum sealed. Extends shelf life significantly. Standard for premium cuts. Higher packaging cost but preferred by most GCC buyers.
IQF — Individually Quick Frozen
Pieces frozen individually before bulk packing. Common for smaller cuts and portions. Allows buyers to use partial quantities without thawing the whole carton.
Block Frozen
Multiple pieces frozen together in a block. Lowest cost option. Common for manufacturing beef and offal. Requires full block to be thawed at once.
Carcass / Half Carcass
Whole or half carcass, chilled or frozen. Lowest processing cost. Requires the buyer to have cutting capability at destination.
Factor 4: Volume and MOQ
Price per kilogram decreases with volume. Horn Gate Trading's minimum order is 5 MT per shipment. Buyers ordering 20 MT+ per shipment will receive more competitive pricing than buyers ordering at MOQ.
